Free to be Me... Reverse Canvas - Donna Salazar Designs

Hi lovelies!

Today I have a mixed media canvas to share with you, using one of my favourite of Donna Salazar Designs chippy pieces, Bonnie's Birdcage. 

I used the reverse of a deep frame art canvas to create my background and simple scrunched up some printed tissue paper and adhered it with glue'n'seal.  Then I popped it into a spray box and hit it with Smooch Spritz in Green Olive, Caramel Latte and Spun Sugar.  The lace in the background was hand dyed using Smooch Spritz Caramel Latte... these colours are so very versatile!

I made a couple of Worn Roses using Spellbinders Rose Creations Die, the metallic sheen was simply some metallic rub swept over the flower once it was dried.  You can download a tutorial for these roses HERE.

The cage itself was first painted with white spray paint and then inked with Mossy, Honey and Stormy Mix'd Media Inx.  These were blended as I worked to create a soft worn effect.
The chipboard alphas from GCD Studios were simply sprayed with Smooch Spritz to match the background colours.

Then all it needed was a cute little bird popping out from the cage!  It needed something to perch on so I went outside and picked up some twigs and dried grasses that the hot summer weather left for me.

Love is All - Mixed Media Canvas - Donna Salazar Designs

Hi everyone!

I've been having lots of fun with little canvases lately!  Here's one I've had the background just waiting for some decoration to finish it off.   I think that's one of the fab things about Mixed Media work, you can play and get messy creating backgrounds, and finish them later when the mood comes to you.

This is a little 4x6 hard back canvas, I added the background heart and love word using Donna's Love Stencil from Want 2 Scrap.  I just positioned the stencil and applied modelling paste, then set it aside to dry.

Next I cut a whole pile of hearts from canvas and adhered these, and it was then that I added the colour.  For this one I've used River Mossy, Ice Rink, Wood Stain and Mossy Mist Smooch Spritz.

The butterfly was cut with Donna's Wonderful Wings Die by Spellbinders, then overlaid with matching Bling from Want 2 Scrap.   Then I cut lots of flowers using Donna's Bitty Blossoms Die, with matching papers from her 6x6 Natural Beauty and Family Jeans Paper Pads.  Once rolled up, I touched the edges with Clearsnap Glue Gloss and then dusted them with Clearsnap Fairy Dust Glitter.  The flowers were finished off with Pearl centres from Want 2 Scrap.

Break Free - Mixed Media Canvas - Donna Salazar Designs

Hi lovelies!

I've had this background ready for months, it was just needing the right words to go with it, and they finally came!  All it needed was the butterfly to go with it and it was finished.

It's only 4x4 inches, so very little... but Donna's small Brick Stencil from Want 2 Scrap was the perfect size.  The main word in the title was made using GCD's Chipboard Alpha Stickers, which were touched with Peridot Mix'd Media Inx and then coated with Fairy Dust Glitter.  The rest of the title was clicked out using my Dymo Caption Maker.

The butterfly was cut out of canvas with Donna's Wonderful Wings Die from Spellbinders... with my love of butterflies I'd be lost without this one!  It was coloured with Peridot Mix'd Media Inx and then  once dried I finished it with some matching Bling from Want 2 Scrap.

Balance - Mixed Media Canvas - Donna Salazar Designs

Hi everyone!

I found a canvas in the boot of my car the other day {it's pretty scary in there, I'm always losing things} and I loved the long shape of this one, it was just enough to spark my mixed media mojo back into action!  And so I grabbed out all my mediums, my fave Donna Salazar goodies and played... here's the result!

I ripped up some papers from Donna's Natural Beauty collection and glued them to the canvas, and then overlaid some torn and scrunched up dictionary papers from Donna's Mix'd Media Stax 2 and glued these down also to create a collage style background.  

Next I adhered an old doily and a couple of chipboard shapes from Want 2 Scrap, then using Donna's large Heart Stencil from Want 2 Scrap created the heart patterns in the top left and bottom right corners.  I also added some interesting texture mediums I have, such as resin sand and opaque flakes.

Once dried, I then spritzed on the colour, River Mossy and Ice Rink Smooch Spritz as well as some Peaches Mix'd Media Ink straight from the refill bottle.  I sprayed it all with water to allow the colours to run.  To help highlight the textures further I added some platinum metallic rub over the canvas.  Then it was time to embellish!!

The title was added using GCD Chipboard Alpha Stickers and some printed text. The colour was added using Mix'd Media Inx and softened by spraying lightly with water.

I cut and rolled some bitty blossoms using various papers from Donna's 6x6 paper pads. The flower petals were touched with Glue Gloss and then sprinkled with Fairy Dust Glitter for added shimmer!

I also cut a butterfly from with Donna's Wonderful Wings die, and overlaid it with some Wonderful Wings Bling from Want 2 Scrap.  I scattered some glass pebbles through the canvas and finished it all off with a matching satin bow.

Embrace your Dreams - Reverse Canvas - The Dusty Attic

I am still loving creating reverse canvases... I love that I start with a pristine base and end up with an art-piece that really invented itself.  From the tearing and rolling back the canvas, to adding the final touches, I just relax and create and then realise it's finished!

This one actually wasn't looking so great at it's beginning.  I had a muddle of colours that were competing with each other instead of blending like well behaved colours should.  So I watered down some Dusty in Colour Mountain Meadow to create a spray and used that to help blend all the colours.  Because there is so much body in the paint, and it dries so fast, the spray version created a perfect medium and helped blend all my colours together beautifully!  {Remember to make up in small lots and rinse out your spray bottles after each use or the paint may set in the pump}.

This part I'm really excited about and had to share as my first closeup!  I used a whole bottle of Dusty in Colour Clear Crackle Varnish in the background once the canvas was completed, I took a chance that I'd get some impressive cracks this way.  It was a deep pool of varnish and took days to dry out... but look at those deep deep cracks, I LOVE them!  Dusty's Crackle and Gloss Varnishes are so well priced that it's really affordable to 'waste' a whole bottle as a background glaze... and as you can see, the effect certainly wasn't a waste!

I chose to use Dusty's new Corner Scroll #4 for this one... I like the bold yet dreamy pattern of the scroll, and with it coming in two sizes in the one pack I could create a layered effect with the smaller one tucked into the base under the large corner scroll.

The chipboard was glued onto the canvas raw, and sprayed at the same time as the canvas was to give it a flowing look.  The edges were defined with Viva InkaGold rub, as were the canvas textures.

I hope you love the deep crackle effect and are inspired to give it a go also.  Just remember, if you use a really thick coat, it will need time to dry through, don't get impatient and 'touch' it to see if it's dry {LOL like I do}.  If the weather is cold or wet, pop it in front of the heater to help it dry quicker.

Trinkets and Treasures ATC Canvas - The Dusty Attic

Hi everyone!  This month's ATC theme at The Dusty Attic is Trinkets and Treasures, and for me this  was open to a plethora of ideas!  So far the ATC's everyone have created are just so gorgeous!  I decided to make an iddy reverse canvas that I had into an ATC, since it was ATC sized!    

I love trinkets and my favourite trinkets are my butterflies, so I have used these sweet Dusty Mini Butterflies #2 to represent them.  

I've popped some plain ones into a little bottle and as they've escaped they've been brought to colour!  Each was painted with Dusty in Colour acrylic paints {I've used Dusty Pink, Lavender Blush and Faded Denim} and then they were touched with some Viva InkaGold Rub in Platinum to highlight them.

The canvas had some texture paste added in random areas to add a little texture and then was sprayed with Smooch Spritz as well as Lindy's Stamp Gang Starburst Stains to create a rainbow of colour.  To pick up and highlight the textures it was touched with some Viva InkaGold Rub.  Once all the butterflies, jar, flowers and title was set the inside was coated in a thick layer of Dusty in Colour Clear Gloss Varnish and set aside for a few days to dry.  The Varnish really makes the colours pop!

So even though this wouldn't fit into an ATC sleeve... I do hope you like my Trinkets and Treasures inspiration!  I've titled it 'My Trinkets become my Treasures" because they do... once I've used them in my projects, layouts, cards etc... I've created a little treasure with them.

Art Soul Life Mini Canvas - Donna Salazar Designs

Hi everyone!  Today I have a little art canvas to share with you... I created this while I was procrastinating making something else, thinking it was supposed to happen that way!

I have used Want 2 Scrap stencils with Texture Paste to created the brick wall background and layered it with loads of colour.  

I've cut some butterflies from Want 2 Scrap canvas, coloured them and added matching Bling to give them loads of wow factor.

I've made some flowers with the Mulberry Paper from the Mix'd Media Stax 2.  I love the different effect using the Mulberry has instead of using plain patterned papers. I have wet them after cutting and shaping them and the water made the paper soften even more and create this felt like look.

 I've also cut some shadow flowers from mulberry paper which I've coloured with smooch spritz, they add a soft contrast with the bricks.

I hope you like what I have created... I had lots of fun making a mess with this one!  I have a step by step tutorial also for you  on how I created the background, and how to utilise all the left over colour.

Another Mixed Media Canvas... this was such messy icky fun, I had paint, gesso and impasto everywhere!

There are many layers on the canvas, Donna Salazar Antiquities PP, Dress Pattern Tissue and; 7 Gypsies Tissue as a background, layered with vintage doilies, paint, impasto and many sprays! All topped off with delicious Dusty Attic and always so pretty Green Tara Roses!!

 The cogs were painted with Adirondack Copper and Terracotta Paints, dabbed with TH Distress Stain Walnut and then spritzed with Pearl Mist. This was heated until the copper paint bubbled to create texture.

 

The Wrought Iron Decorative Trim was painted in warm white and then spritzed with Moonshadow Pirate's Plunder Gold.

The dress form was painted in Golden's Titan Buff and Raw Umber, misted with Moonshadow Pirate's Plunder Gold and then dressed in Green Tara lace and muslin.

I am creating a step by step tutorial for the background on this one if you are interested, so check back soon, it should be up by the end of the month.  It's surprisingly easy and uses a minimal amount of 'fancy' art mediums, most you already likely will have in your stash!

All things are possible...

...in the land of Faerie!

I love this Dusty Attic Garden Fairy DA0278... last night I wanted to play with something but had no photos that were working for me, but she called to me to be created!

I have to admit, before I went to bed last night she looked like a dodgy fairy, but there must have been some magic in the air last night because this morning she was gorgeous... and so a canvas needed to be created!

The Canvas background is mixed media, using paper offcuts and tissue paper, all glued down and then tinted with paints and mists... then a little impasto to create texture, gesso and then more mists.  I have used Glimmermists as well as Starburst Stains on this one.  The Starburst Stains have that amazing glimmer!!

These Dusty Attic Leafy Stems #3 DA0580 above and Russian Alphabet DA0522 below were both painted white, dabbed with aqua paint, spritzed with Moonshadow Pirate's Plunder Gold and then coated with dimensional magic and sprinkled with mica flakes!

The gorgeous Dusty Attic Garden Fairy was painted white first and then with Golden Titan Buff for the skin tones, Golden Raw Umber for the hair {and left thick for texture}, and with Moonglow Glitz Spritz Desert Moon Horny Toad Teal {how's that for a name}, it gave her freckles!  Her wings were 'smooched' with Smooch {by Clearnsnap} Ocean Soul, Frosted Aqua & a little Habby Pink, and lastly were backed with Textiva Fusible Film.   She was then dressed in lovely soft muslin and draped in ZVA Bling!

The canvas was trimmed with some delicious Green Tara Lace L2898OW and was coloured with the same mists used over the canvas... love this lace!!

She will look beautiful on the wall in my new scrap room {if it ever gets finished}... she's for me, all mine!!
