You Are... - Donna Salazar Designs

Hi everyone!

Today I have another sweet layout to share showcasing my gorgeous god-daughter.  I love that even though she lives so far away from me, I can see her each day on Facebook {and nick her photos LOL}.

It's a simple little layout, but packed with some favourite bits... my ruffles, some crocheted doilies, butterflies, polka dots and that wonderful corrugated board!

The cut out titles in Donna's paper pads make finding a title so easy!

And I created a new flower tutorial for you!  I wanted something that didn't need a million layers, but still looked 'full'... I'm loving the outcome.

Bouquet Rose - Flower Tutorial

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share another flower tutorial, this one is to create my "Bouquet" Roses...

For this one I have used Spellbinders Grand Peony Creations Dies.  I love the size of these... using the largest dies you can create a flower as big as the palm of your hand!!

For the Bouquet Rose you will need to cut 3 each of 4 consecutive layer sizes.  I have used the ones as shown for this tutorial... this creates a bloom about 2 inches wide.

Assemble the layers, smallest to largest, offsetting the petals as you go.  Secure with a brad...

Spritz with water, fanning to allow the water to fall between the layers...

Bring the layers up around the brad, one layer at a time, forming a 'bud' in the center...

Allow the top of the petals to fan out slightly, hold and 'squish' the layers together towards the base...

Once you have finished all the layers, dab the top with Mix'd Media Inx and then spritz with water to allow the ink to run, I use Jasmine as I like how the white softens the edge colouring.

Then gently help the flower open, keeping the petals quite tight near the center and more open towards the outside.

Dry it off with a heat gun {keep the gun moving so it doesn't burn the petals} or alternatively allow it to dry overnight.

Wild Rose - Flower Tutorial

I've been creating more flowers!  This time with Spellbinders Rose Creations die. This is such a versatile die, if you can't decide which of Donna Salazar's Flower dies to buy first, I would suggest this one!

So, you will need 3 consecutive petal sizes, cutting 1 of the largest, 3 of the middle and then 2 of the smallest - as shown below.  You can use any sizes you want, the 3 smallest ones create a sweet little flower!  For the tutorial I have used the 3 as marked.  I have used one of Donna Salazar's 'Trunk in the Attic' papers for this one, love the creamy vintage look.

First we assemble the layers, smallest to largest and secure with a brad.  We don't need to glue the layers.

Once together spritz the layers with water... just enough to make the paper damp!  You can always add more as you work if needed.

Bring the first layer up around the brad to form a bud, continue for all layers, making sure the petals offset one another as you work.

The larger layers can have the tips folded back a bit to create an opening bud...

Once done it will look something like this...

Dab the top of the flower with Jasmine Mix'd Media Inx.  I use the Jasmine as it softens the colouring of the paper, but you could any colour that works for your project.

Spritz with water to allow the ink to blend and run...

and then gently open the petals, open out the largest layer to form nice open petals and allow the others to fall as they wish, we can open them a little more later...

Flip it over and dry the back first with a heat gun, to set the larger petals... 

Then turn it back right side up and keep drying.  Keep the heat gun moving so you don't burn the petals.  Alternatively sit the flower in a sunny spot and let it dry naturally.

Once dried you can arrange the petals more if needed, as we haven't glued these once the layers are dry you will be able to spin the layers so they sit just right!

Pink Tiara - Flower Tutorial

Hi everyone... today I have a 'not so boofy' flower to share with you!  I was inspired by a 'Camellia' flower from Green Tara and thought I could re-create it by hand just for the fun of it, and ended up with something very different and not Camellia looking LOL!  Natasha decided we should call it Pink Tiara... {don't tell her but I think maybe she was a bit sleep deprived and delirious at the time!}

This flower uses Donna Salazar's Grand Peony Creations Die Set and one from the Carnations Die Set from Spellbinders.

You will need:

Spellbinders Grand Peony Creations Die

Spellbinders Carnation Creations Die

GCD Spring in Bloom 8x8 Paper Pad

Awl, Skewer - something thin to curl paper with

Stamens

Craft Glue

Cut the following layers, they'll all fit easily out of an 8x8 sheet.

Lightly mist the layers with water, so they are just dampened.

Using an awl, skewer or anything thin enough to roll the petals around, roll each petal into the center.

Do this for each layer...

then dry off with a heat gun.  

The heat not only dries it, but shrinks the paper fibers slightly and helps it hold its shape better.

Apply glue around the center...

and build your layers, using all the peony layers, keeping the Carnation layers aside.

Make sure all the petals are offset against one another.

Grab some stamens {I used 5 and folded them in half} and thread them through the first Carnation layer...

add some glue and thread through the second Carnation layer.

Add some more glue and then thread these through the Peony layers...

unrolling the petals as you go.

 And you're done! Trim the stamens at the back and secure with tape.

The aqua flower on the right uses the same 'recipe' skipping the wetting part... it creates a softer curl and a more open flower.

If you don't have stamens {I got mine from a craft store}, you could knot the ends of some thick embroidery thread or twine, or use a decorative brad through the center.

Aster - Flower Tutorial

Hi everyone... I have another flower tutorial for you all!  Its based on the same premise as my "layer, wet and squish" roses, but uses a new die from Spellbinders, the Aster Flower Topper.  

I was drawn to these because of the cute petal shape, but found when they arrived that they had a extra cut line in the petal {because who reads descriptions right?} but it's sooooo cool, was a really lovely surprise!!

You will need:

Spellbinders Aster Flower Topper Die Set

8x8 sheet of Patterned Paper

Mix'd Media Inx {Jasmine}

Awl and Plain Brad

Water Mister

Cut 2 layers of each from the Aster Die set, these will cut out of an 8x8 sheet of paper.

You'll need to poke a hole through the centers on these first, and then layer them smallest to largest and secure with a brad.  Offset the petals.  I have reversed the papers on each layer to get a 'variegated' look.

Wet the layers with a water mister and then bring the petals up around the brad a layer at a time, scrunching the smallest ones to form a 'bud'.

Take care with the remaining petals as they will separate with the inner cut.  Squish them around the lower part of the petal, leaving the fragile tops free, misting with more water through the middle if needed.

Dab Jasmine Mix'd Media Inx to the top of the petals...

then spray with water to allow the ink to run.

Slowly open the petals, pushing outwards...

dry it off with a heat gun or let dry overnight and you're done!!

It creates a cute, funky flower which is quick to make and has lots of 'floof' without needing a whole pile of layers!
